One word: FIERCE~

The 2009 Mnet Asian Music Awards (where’s the rest of Asia?) kicked off its first show on November 21st. I find that the awards themselves aren’t really all that important because the nominee list is just a lot of name dropping and, even from the nominees, the ones that deserve to win never do in any of these awards show. The only legitimate music awards show is the Korean Music Awards out there, but not as many overseas fans pay attention to it because it isn’t congested with idols. So I’m just going to focus on some of the many great collaboration stages that took place at MAMA.

Check ‘em out~

As a sort of celebration of this year’s biggest dance crazes, the ladies of KARA and Brown Eyed Girls performed a joint stage of leathery sexiness. The audio during this performance left much to be desired, but the payoff at the end with a superb mash-up of “Abracadabra” and “Mister” was well worth it. Only shame was that it wasn’t longer and there were just way too many unneeded background dancers. Harem overload~

2PM is back in full force with the heart-wrenching “Heartbeat“. Master conductor JYP makes an appearance alongside the boys flinging his wand like there is no tomorrow and no apparent knowledge of how to look like he knows how to conduct either. Despite the fact that Mnet told the press that they were trying to get Jae-bum to perform with 2PM, he wasn’t there, but he was there in spirit as their formation for “Again and Again” maintained a spot for their fallen leader.

Superstar K winner, Seo In-gook, has really taken the KPOP world by storm as of late. Alongside impressive balladry of Baek Ji-young’s latest “Do Not Forget“, Seo In-gook sits behind his piano, looking all adorable. The performance would have also been much better if the fans would have shut up. We know you love them, let them show their appreciation.

2NE1 probably had the most extensive stage design with their “21st Street” musical. Although the dance formations and the transitions were a little sloppy, the girls were on fire as each of them performed their special singles. Dara looks fierce in her “KISS” image. Minzy and CL’s “Please Don’t Go” performance was filled with energy, as expected of these talented youngsters. Bom’s “You and I” performance was a bit boring compared to that of her fellow members, but she’s the only one actively promoting her single on the broadcast programs so she doesn’t need that much special attention.

This performance is my personal favorite of the night. Four rappers from female groups spit out some flow, with a special appearance from the female rapper virtuso T (Tasha). The concept was interesting, and everyone was enjoying themselves. The audience shots added to the incredible energy of the performance. Miryo of Brown Eyed Girls is really the only legit female group rapper that should be standing alongside Tasha, but I can’t say that Jewelry’s Baby J and 4minute’s Hyun-ah and Ji-yoon didn’t do an amazing job as well. Check these ladies out~

The performance fueling the most controversy among netizens is Ivy having 2PM’s NichkhunTouch Me” too much. The set-up and stage is very elaborate with a sort of vampiress theme going on with Nichkhun as the embarrased, but more than willing prey. I can understand that this performance was rather suggestive, but for people to call this a “porn” is really stretching the imagination. A lot of the fury is really coming from Nichkhun fans who don’t like their precious prince charming touched. I feel bad for Ivy’s boobs; they are just pushed up and spilling out like crazy in her Victorian style corset outfit.

The solo boys of Big Bang came together to fulfill everyone’s “Korean Dream“. G-Dragon in all his winged glory performed “Heartbreaker“, and Tae-yang performed “Where U At” and “Wedding Dress” showcasing his smooth dancing prowess. Then bringing black and white together, Tae-yang and G-Dragon proceeds to show the crowd what they’re good at.

I am reading the first Deathstalker book and I confess to skipping to all the Finlay, Evangeline and Finlay/Evangeline bits.

Like this:

He pushed her gently away from him, so that he could look into her face. Her dark eyes held him like a fist. "You're always with me, my love. You're always in my thoughts. I even took your middle name to christen my sword."
"Thanks a whole lot," said Evangeline dryly."Other lovers get gifts of flowers or jewelry. I get a sword named after me."
"It's a good sword..."

LOLOLOLOLOL *swoon*

They are so my ship for this series - if anyone thought I wouldn't go for the effete aristocrat who is secretly the best gladiator in the arena to deal with his insane adrenaline-junkiness and general issues and a perfectly bred upper-class lady who is secretly a clone (of the original lady) and a member of the Resistance, with some family enmity thrown in, they would be really really deluded. And then he joins the clone resistance as an assassin for her sake because he doesn't really care about politics but he would do anything for her (there is a scene in Book 2 which made me die when he comes back from a suicide mission all victorious and tells her not to touch him because she'll get blood on her dress and means it. And she tells him to go on another mission asap even though she knows he might die, because she is dedicated to the clone cause. And he goes, even if he knows it's hopeless, because he couldn't care less about a clone cause, but he will do whatever she asks. And there is clinging). Ahhhhhhhh, my shiny shiny ship.

Ahhh, Simon R. Green, you spoil me!

Most of my grown-up fictional tastes can be explained by the fact that growing up I devoured Alexandre Dumas and Russian musicals. Doomed love, men with swords, melodrama, and things that never end well - yeah, that's where I got it all.

And you know what's best? When you combine Dumas and Russian musicals - no wonder that growing up, the Soviet musical film D'Artagnan and Three Musketeers was probably my favorite movie. When I was 10 or so, I probably knew every song in that movie by heart. I didn't know what a shipper was but I was definitely a shipper for D'Artagnan/Constance and Anne/Buckingham (even more so for the latter - now that I think about it, it's scary to think how my shipping preferences have been influenced by childhood devouring of Dumas - between St. Luc/Jeanne, Bussy/Diane, and La Mole/Margot, that's my ship types right there. Good Lord. That's totally my source for tough fighting men and women they worship thing I have going, with a dose of dysfunction thrown in. No wonder I love dysfunctional ships).

Anyway, that Soviet movie is something I am not really rational about - I can comprehend its flaws with my grown-up eyes but the child part of my brain will unquestioningly and blindly love it. Not to mention that I honestly do think that of all the adaptations I have seen (American and Russian - I have never seen a French one, though I do want to), it's the closest in spirit to the book.

Anyway, imagine my excitement when I found the songs on youtube.

Songs )

I really need to dig out my DVDs of the 1970s French mini of La Dame de Monsoreau, my favorite Dumas adaptation (Bussy was my earliest fictional crush. Oh, how I cried when he died).

OMG, youtubing, I've discovered there is a 2008 version. I need to get my hands on it - I know the book so backward and forward I don't need subs.

Hmmm, the old English translation of that novel is horrific - it's abridged and Victorianish. I wonder if there is a more modern one (I only read it in Russian). Ehhh, this book must have given Victorians fits anyway, the main OTP are adulterers as the heroine is married to another (Dumas is pretty careful to tell us she was forced into her hideous marriage but I doubt that would make Victorians feel any better) and the secondary OTP is lawfully married which a Victorian would approve except for the whole thing where the husband used to be one of Henri III's boyfriends and has no regrets about it. Ha!
